San Cristóbal de Las Casas with Kids and Dogs: A Family Guide

San Cristóbal de Las Casas is one of the most family-friendly cities in Mexico — if you know where to go. The cobblestone streets, the markets, the food, and the pace of life all work in favor of families with children and dogs. But not every tour or restaurant is set up for it.

This guide covers what to do, where to eat, which of our tours welcome kids and pets, and why some families come back year after year.

Why San Cristóbal de Las Casas works for families

Three reasons:

  • It is walkable. The historic center is compact, and most of what you want to see is within 15 minutes on foot. That matters when you are traveling with a stroller, a toddler, or a dog.
  • It is safe. San Cristóbal de Las Casas is one of the safest cities in Chiapas. Families walk the Andador Turístico at night without concern.
  • It is food-friendly. Chiapan food is not spicy by default, which matters for kids. Tamales, quesadillas, tortillas, and café de olla are all kid-approved.

What to do with kids in San Cristóbal de Las Casas

Beyond the obvious (the main squares, the cathedral, the Andador Turístico), here is what actually works with children:

Markets

The Mercado José Castillo Tielemans is a hit with kids — the colors, the smells, the animals, the food. It is loud and crowded, which is part of the fun. Bring cash, go in the morning, and let the kids pick one snack each.

The arco and the Andador

The Arco del Carmen and the pedestrian street are stroller-friendly and full of things to look at. It is the easiest walk in the city with kids.

Parks and plazas

The Plaza 31 de Marzo and the Plaza de la Paz both have space for kids to run. There are usually vendors with balloons, snacks, and small toys.

Our tours

Every one of our tours welcomes children. The San Cristóbal Walking Tour is the easiest for young kids — it is 3 hours, the tastings are small, and the pace is flexible. The food tours are also family-friendly, but involve more sitting and eating, which can be harder for toddlers.

Traveling with dogs in San Cristóbal de Las Casas

San Cristóbal de Las Casas is dog-friendly in a way that surprises most travelers. Dogs are welcome in many cafés, on the Andador, and — importantly — on all of our tours.

Dogs on our tours

Yes. All of our tours welcome dogs. We have had guests bring small dogs, large dogs, and everything in between. If your dog is well-behaved and comfortable in a group, they are welcome.

What we ask: bring water for your dog, keep them on a leash in the markets and kitchens, and let us know when you book so we can plan the route accordingly.

Dogs in the city

Most outdoor spaces welcome dogs. Many cafés have water bowls out front. The main markets are trickier — some vendors are fine with dogs, others are not — so keep your dog close and ask before entering a stall.

Which of our tours are best for families?

San Cristóbal Walking Tour — $250 MXN, 3 hours

Best for families with young children. 3 hours, small tastings, flexible pace, starts at Arco del Carmen. Kids under 4 do not pay. Dogs welcome.

Authentic Local Experience — $750 MXN, 3.5 hours

Best for families with older children who are curious about food and producers. 5 local places, tastings at each, coffee and cacao. Kids under 4 do not pay. Dogs welcome.

Gastro-Cultural Walk — $1,180 MXN, 4.5 hours

Best for families who want a deeper food experience. 5 signature kitchens, 4.5 hours. Longer, so better for kids 8+. Kids under 4 do not pay. Dogs welcome.

Spirits from Chiapas — $880 MXN, 3 hours

This is a night tour with alcohol tastings. It is not designed for young children, but older teens (with parental supervision) can enjoy it. Dogs welcome, but the bars are louder and more crowded.

This is a full-day tour from Tuxtla Gutiérrez to San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Recommended for ages 12+ because it includes spirits tastings. Dogs welcome.

Practical tips for families

  • Altitude. San Cristóbal de Las Casas is at ~2,200 m. Kids feel it more than adults. Take the first day slow, drink water, and do not overplan.
  • Sun and rain. The highlands have strong sun during the day and afternoon showers. Bring hats, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket for everyone.
  • Food. Chiapan food is not spicy by default, but always ask. Tamales, quesadillas, tortillas, and fruit are safe bets for kids.
  • Cash. Markets and small stalls do not take cards. Carry small bills for snacks, tips, and small purchases.
  • Strollers. The Andador Turístico is stroller-friendly. The side streets and markets are not — cobblestones and narrow aisles. A carrier is easier than a stroller for the historic center.

Why some families come back

We have had guests who have taken our tours four times — once for a birthday, and then again every time family visits. What they tell us is always the same: the tour is not really about the food. It is about the time together.

That is what we try to build: an experience where families connect, where kids ask questions, where grandparents remember something they had forgotten, and where the dog naps under the table while everyone eats. San Cristóbal de Las Casas is a city that rewards slow travel with family — and we try to make that easy.

FAQ

Do kids pay full price?

Children under 4 do not pay. Children 4 and older pay the regular price, because the tastings and the guide time are the same.

Are the tours suitable for toddlers?

The Walking Tour is the easiest for toddlers — it is shorter, the tastings are small, and the pace is flexible. The food tours involve more sitting and eating, which can be harder for very young children.

Can we bring a stroller?

On the Walking Tour, yes for the Andador and the main squares. The markets and side streets are harder — cobblestones and narrow aisles. A carrier is easier for the historic center.

Can we bring our dog on the food tours?

Yes, on all our tours. We ask that you keep the dog on a leash in the markets and kitchens, and let us know when you book so we can plan the route.

What if my child has dietary restrictions?

Tell us when you book. The Walking Tour is easiest to adapt (small tastings). The food tours need advance notice because the kitchens prepare specific dishes.

Is there a family discount?

We do not have a formal family discount, but message us on WhatsApp when you book and tell us your group. We will do what we can to make it work.
